He was a model to me of artistic labor and discipline, even if those early paintings were painfully amateurish. The painting followed me from Amherst to my first job in New York, and on to London and Delhi. IT WASN’T MY intention to start an essay about artistic beginnings with a story of artistic death. And at Sunday's show, those nominations translated into awards: Every televised competitive Grammy went to at least one woman. But at the Grammys, where much of the focus is on performers, it appeared like women were ruling the industry. “I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said. SZA, who led nominations with nine, took home three awards — but was completely shut out of the general field categories.

The British musician Yazmin Lacey, 35, sings in a mellow, textured voice, often just behind the beat. She’s been selling out dates for her first headlining tour, which began in Warsaw in November, in support of her debut LP, “Voice Notes.” (She plans to add U.S. dates in 2024.) Before “Voice Notes,” she released a trio of EPs (the first of which, “Black Moon,” appeared in 2017) while working full time with a youth support program in Nottingham. But with this LP, she’s made music her sole career. “Voice Notes” takes its title from the stream-of-consciousness audio messages Lacey leaves for her friends and the spontaneous melodies and ideas she records on her phone.

The Artist’s Mind What it feels like for female artists to wrestle with ambition, ego, ambivalence and inheritance. That isolation has, historically, been especially true for women artists, some of the most celebrated of whom have seen “writer” or “painter” or “filmmaker” treated as a secondary part of their identity. For this issue, we asked legendary female artists to tell us about a younger woman whose work excites them and gives them hope. But for the current generation of women artists, who have come of age with models who more closely resemble them, identity seems more like a source of community than a trap. Women artists, born into a Babylon of exclusion and possibility, reveal that creative inheritance is as promiscuous as legal inheritance is strict.
